College Profile

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Government College is affiliated to the West Bengal State University. It is located at the heart of the built-in city of New Town, Kolkata with a five acres large campus, a multipurpose playground, a state-of-the art gym, high standard laboratories and a growing library. The campus has a four storied, multi-block building with elevator facility and the campus is friendly towards differently abled persons. A college canteen provides a healthy and balanced working lunch and snacks to the students. The classrooms are large, airy and aided with facilities for the use of ICT. The high-speed internet connection is freely accessible to all the stakeholders that enhances the overall learning experience and makes things smoother.

As per the Hon. Supreme Court & UGC/MHRD Regulations all students, who are going to take admission in the Semester I, session 2019-20, are hereby notified that they must have to fill in and submit an Anti-Ragging Undertaking to the College office within seven days after commencement of the class. The Anti-Ragging Affidavit Form can be downloaded from the College Website OR UGC website OR can be collected from the office of the college.

If any student fails to submit the Anti-Ragging Undertaking, he/she will not be allowed for Registration of the University.

The counselling cell of the college

With an increasing understanding of the need for mental wellbeing of the students, the college has started a counselling cell in April 2019. The cell is run by the trained experts from the department of Psychology.

  • To promote coping and adjustment in life

Mission of Counselling cell

  • Providing guidance to students to deal with academic stress
  • Provide psychological aid to deal with psychosocial and emotional issues.
  • Provide assistance in developing self-help strategies.

Career Counselling Cell

The Career Counselling Cell of the college plays a pivotal role in guiding students towards their professional goals and aspirations. Its primary objective is to help students make informed decisions about their careers, enhancing their chances of success in the competitive job market.

The Cell offers a range of services tailored to meet individual needs. This includes one-on-one counselling sessions where students can discuss their interests, skills, and career objectives with trained professionals. These sessions provide personalized guidance and help in setting realistic career goals.

Workshops and seminars are frequently organized to address various aspects of career development, including resume writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies. These events are designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge necessary for a successful job hunt.

Grievance Redressal Cell

In keeping with the Guidelines issued by the UGC on April 11th, 2023 the Grievance Redressal Cell, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Government College was set up to address grievances of students related to academic matters, mattersrelated to interactions with peers, teaching or non-teaching staff or related to Canteen, Drinking water, Common room facilities, Playground, Gymnasium facilities, Toilet facilities etc.

Internal Complaints Committee (ICC)

From the very inception of this college in the new premises in 2015 the college had a Woman’s Grievance cell as the Teachers’ Council sub – committee. This cell had organised several workshops and awareness programmes specially for the women stakeholders of the college.Not only that the cell had also handled  firmly a few written grievances lodged by the girl students of the college under the active guidance and support of the Officer-in- Charge,Dr.Sebanti Bhattacharya. The college has a zero tolerance approach in dealing with any such complaints.
The Woman’s Grievance Cell was dissolved and immediately an Internal Complaint Committee was formed on 22nd of January, 2019 in keeping with the UGC guidelines. This committee aims at developing an understanding of gender, managing diversity and inclusiveness in a multi cultural workplace and legal awareness on the Sexual Harassment at workplace (Prevention,Prohibition and Redressal)Act,2013.
Ms.Madhupurna Ghosh ,Joint Secretary of an NGO named Sutanutir Sakhya is working as an external member of this Committee. The Officer in charge of the institution, Dr.Sebanti Bhattacharya along with the Committee is always trying to maintain a healthy atmosphere both for learning and teaching. The college also has an Internal Complaint Box which is placed near the staircase which has maximum footfall and is clearly visible to all its stakeholders. This Complaint Box is opened twice a month by the Presiding Officer of the Committee.There are enough
notices  throughout the college premises stating the purpose of the Committee and clearly stating the method of lodging a complaint. On 16th March, 2019 the Committee had organised a gender sensitization programme wherein Ms.Madhupurna Ghosh, Joint Secretary, Sutanutir Sakhya had delivered a lecture along with an interactive session with all its stakeholders. The stakeholders of this college can lodge their initial complaint  to the above mentioned committee members through phone calls ,emails or even verbally in the staffroom confidentially.

Equal Opportunity Cell

The SC, ST Cell of the college is established in the academic year 2023-2024 with the purpose of empowering the SC/ST communities in the college. Its primarily aimed to oversee the effective implementation of policies and programmes for disadvantaged groups, to provide guidance and counselling with respect to academic, financial, social and other matters and to enhance the diversity within the campus.

Some of the specific aims of the committee is as follows:

  • To implement the reservation policy for SCs/STs in the institute.
  • Keep tracks regarding the implementation of the policies in respect of admissions, appointments to teaching and non-teaching positions in the institute, and analysis of the data showing the trends and changes towards fulfilling the required quota.
  • To take such follow up measures for achieving the objectives and targets laid down for the purpose by the Government of India, MHRD and the UGC.
